The primary objective of the NPDP is to develop information resources (e.g., databases, digital library of technical reports, etc.) that can be accessed by the dam engineering and dam safety community. An effective and efficient means to make this information available is to put it in a format that is accessible on the Internet. Accomplishing this for all forms of information (i.e., engineering reports, drawings, photographs, video, etc.) is achievable with today's technology. However, to do so takes considerable time and resources. In the long term, creating a digital library is our primary objective.
In the near term, our goal is to develop an information system that will provide the user with the capability to identify the specific resources (i.e., reports, articles, photographs) that will meet their needs.
Resources currently being developed for access on the World Wide Web include:
Incident Database - this is the master database of dam incidents on file at the NPDP archive. It will provide basic information about an incident (e.g., date, type of incident).
Reference Database - this database will contain all documents on file in the NPDP archive. The user will be able to identify documents by keywords, dam name or NPDP (or NATDAM) ID number, or by document type (i.e. videotape).
