Landslides upstream of a reservoir are a major hazard, and need to be monitored regularly. The monitoring can be done using inclinometers and also by the use of precise survey networks. Inclinometer data can be used to arrive at the rate of movement, as well as to determine the plane of sliding. Precise surveys would provide data on the extent of movement on the ground surface. These normally yield information on the X-Y-Z planes, and again can be related to rate of movement.
